Adoniram Judson

Adoniram Judson (1788-1850) was gifted with a brillant mind. He learned to read at age 3, could translate Greek at 12, and enrolled in Brown University when he was 16. While there he was befriended by Jacob Eames, a man who rejected the miracles of the Bible. When Judson graduated as valedictorian in 1807, he had been so influenced by Eames that he denied his Christian faith.

아도니람 저드슨 (1788-1850)은 뛰어난 지적 능력을 은사로 받았습니다. 세 살에 글을 읽었고, 열두 살에 헬라어를 번역할 수 있었고, 열여섯 살에 브라운 대학에 들어갔습니다. 재학 중에 제이콥 임스라는 사람과 가깝게 지냈는데 그 사람은 성경의 기적들을 부인하는 사람이었습니다. 허드슨이 1807년 수석으로 졸업하였을 때는 임스로부터 너무 많은 영향을 받아서 자신의 기독교 신앙을 부인하기에 이르렀습니다.

One night, when Judson was staying at a village inn, he was disturbed by a man moaning in the next room. The following morning he asked the innkeeper about the ailing man. He was told that the man had died and that his name was Jacob Eames.

어느 날 저녁, 저드슨이 한 마을의 여관에서 묵게 되었을 때 옆방 남자의 신음소리가 그의 신경을 거슬리게 했습니다. 다음날 아침 그는 여관주인에게 병들어 신음하던 그 사람에 대해 물어보았습니다. 저드슨은 그 남자의 이름이 제이콥 임스라는 것과 그가 이미 죽었다는 말을 듣게 되었습니다.

The startling coincidence of being near his friend at the point of his death stunned Judson. He felt compelled to search his own soul and to seek God's pardon for denying his faith. From that point on, he began to live for the Lord. God led him to pionner missionary work in Burma. At the end of his life, Adoniram could look back on his missionary that had planted dozens of churches and influenced thousands to become believers.

자기의 친구가 죽는 그 시점에서 가까이 있었다는 그 놀라운 우연의 일치는 저드슨에게 큰 충격이었습니다. 그는 자신의 영혼을 다시 살펴보지 않을 수 없었고 자기의 신앙을 부인했던 것에 대해 하나님의 용서를 간구하게 되었습니다. 그 이후로 그는 주님을 위해서 살았습니다. 하나님께서 그에게 버마의 선교사업을 개척하는 일을 맡겼습니다. 아도니람은 그의 삶을 마칠 즈음 자신의 목회사역을 통해 수십 개의 교회가 세워지고 수천 명의 사람들이 영향을 받아 그리스도인이 된 것을 뒤돌아 볼 수 있었습니다.
